Maine Learning Results Alignment

Maine Learning Result: Health & Physical Education
C-Health promotion and risk reduction
C1- Healthy Practices and Behaviors
9-diploma.
Statement: Students demonstrate healthy practices and/or behaviors to maintain or improve the health of self and others in each of the following areas: healthy eating; physical activity; tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use prevention; and prevention of STD's, HIV and unintended pregnancies.
Rationale: America has shown many unhealthy habits that affect the lives of many people. From obesity, lack of exercise, lack of knowledge about disease, and unprotected sex, to information about drugs and alcohol, students should be aware of the dangers of living an unhealthy life.

Assessment
Formative (Assessment for Learning)
I will know students have mastered the knowledge by having them focus what they have learned before as indicators.
Pre-Assessment: I will be looking at what the students have created in the previous lessons as a formative assessment. Because they will cover some similar aspects of health from what they have learned in other lessons, they will be equipped to complete this task.
Self-Assessment: Students will assess others presentations as well as their own.

Summative (Assessment of Learning)
The students have already demonstrated an understanding in creating Imovies and presenting information in front of the class. By creating a health ad and presenting it to the class they will be able to bring some of the aspect of health to the center of attention.
You are a team of marketers in Franklin County who have signed up to make a health concepts ad. You are to create an ad that evaluates and gives advice on daily health habits that can be improved. There is a wide range of health concepts that should be covered in this ad: hygiene, physical activity, disease prevention, anti-drug and tobacco, anti-drinking, and issues relating towards unprotected sex and STD’s. Evaluate a range of health planners/diary blogs to see what health issues people have on a daily bases. Your ad will be analyzed and evaluated by the Board of Directors at Franklin Memorial Hospital and other leaders in the HCC (Healthy Community Coalition). If your ad is chosen you and your team will be in charge of designing your ad to be shown on the TV. Your ad will also be uploaded to Youtube for the publics view. Be creative, concise, and cooperative with your teammates to finish this task. Students will be graded on two different criterias including their products (•Health concepts and advise (30%) •Storyboard (15%) •Research (20%) •Teamwork (20%)•Effects (10%)•Grammar (5%)) and their presentation (•Content (20%)•Flows easy (20%)•Preparedness (20%)•Clear/answers questions (20%)•Timeing (10%)•Team Collaboration (10%)).

Integration

Technology: The teacher integrates technology into the lesson for many reasons. Teacher will highten the students skills and increase knowledge about what technology is in the world today and how it is being used efficiently. By incorporating a imovie into the presentation, students will demonstrate a knowlegde in the use of technology.

English: Students will be blogging the information they found on the "HCC blog". They will demonstrate writing skills by completeing the storyboard and adding information on the blog.

Groupings

I will have students group up by using Think Pair Share. By having the students find their own information for the presentation then pulling all the inforamtion together, students will get more information about each topic they can pool together in completeing the task. They will the work as a group of four or five in creating the health ad.

Differentiated Instruction

Strategies:
Verbal-Linguistic: Students will use Inverted Triangle to jot down any ideas about an ad that they come up with.
Visual/Spatial: Students will watch an ad that was created by others about health topics.
Bodily/Kinesthetic: Students will physically be acting in the ads and demonstrating healthy behaviors.
Musical/Rhythmic: Students will incorporate music into their ad to bump up the creative points for their ad.
Intrapersonal: Students will work by themself at first to brainstorm ideas.
Interpersonal: Students then will collaborate with each other to get multiple ideas and will work with one another in the creation of the ad.
Naturalist: Working outdoors is accepted and encouraged while filming.

Modifications/Accommodations:
I will review student’s IEP, 504 or ELLIDEP and make appropriate modifications and accommodations.

Absent/Late policy: All work that is not turned in ontime will have 5 points automatically deducted the following day it is turned in. From then on points deducted will double each school day. EXAMPLE: If a paper was due on thursday and you would have got a 100%, friday it would be 95%, monday it would be 85%, tuesday it would be 65%. No papers will be acepted after the third day unless prior arrangments have been made with me. If you were absent for a class, exceptions will be made if you come see me the morning you come back to school. It is your responsibility to track me down if you missed something, not the other way around. This lesson is based on online resources that can be done at home if you have the internet. If this is not an option, please see me when return.

Extensions:
By having the students create and ad and post it on the internet, they will educate others that look at it. Students will now have the ability to create educational tools that the community can access and use. Students can go above and beyond by actually working with the community and helping them create a health promotional ad.

Maine Standards for Initial Teacher Certification and Rationale

Standard 3 - Demonstrates a knowledge of the diverse ways in which students learn and develop by providing learning opportunities that support their intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and cultural development.
Rationale: The lesson provides students with flexability in intelligences for them to better their understandings about some of the basic health concepts. I have used materials that I have found to works with a variety of students with different intelligences.
Beach Ball: I will have students be using their textbooks and the internet as resources for their health ads. They will be able to gather data for their group by using the WebQuest as a tool for learning about the various health concepts they need to cover. I will be giving the students personal freedom of however they want the ad to look like.. This will allow them to work comfortably with the multiple intellagence that suits them. I will allow the students to teach the class however they feel is necessary. They are the teachers of drugs, nutrition, physical fitness, and teen pregnancy to the "HCC" audience.
Clipboard: Students will be using a the HCC blog as a graphic organizer to store any information that they get from the websites. This will organize what they will need to cover in the presentation. By using the blog students will be able to organize the information and also read and remember the information better because they have gone through the info so much. I will be showing the students previous samples to the class and will issue a challenge for the students to create better health ad. By answering any clarifying questions students will understand what they will need to do and what the expectations of the presentations are. Studnet will learn many different concepts in health and be able to use the information to make healthier choices.
Microscope: By learning the material first and then teaching the material to an audience, students are constantly familiarizing themselves with the information. Because they are learning and repeating, writing, and thinking about "what the health concepts are", students will show mastery of understanding. I will allow students to explore other facts about the topic by the use of the internet. They are examining every aspect of the information. By completeing this task students will demonstrate their knowledge of drugs, teen pregnancy, physical fitness, and nutrition as well as being able to teach others.
Puppy: Students will go through the WebQuest by themselves and then be divided up and have their own section of the room to work on their presentations. I will be helping and guiding students by motivating them to explore their personal teaching strategy. By having teamwork as a grading criteria the student will focus on how everyone will contribute. They will all share equal parts in the presentation and not feel afraid to tell the group their idea. Students will be asked to respect everyones opinion on the information. Many students come from different family backgrounds and having a safe, jugdmental-free environment will help in the educational process.

Standard 4 - Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, curriculum goals, and learning and development theory.
Rationale:This lesson provides students to learn about drugs, nutrition, physical fitness, and teen pregnancy through the research of the different concepts. The standards will be tought to them by chapter discussions, peers and teacher analysis the class, and research online about the topic. Students demonstrate healthy practices and/or behaviors to maintain or improve the health of self and others by teaching tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use prevention to their peers.
Apply - Ability to use knowledge effectively in new situations and diverse contexts. By completeing this task and presetnation students will be able to apply the presentation skills and technology awareness to many different types of jobs. Many careers need people able to use technology and the product the students create clearly demonstrates their ability. I should keep my mind oper to the various products that are created throughout this experience because there are many ways to organize an ad. This will allow the students to have a personal freedom of the way they want to make the health ad.
Standard 5 - Understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies and appropriate technology to meet students’ needs.
Rationale: I have incorporated many intelligences in this lesson so a variety of students with different MI will be able to participate in the activities this lesson covers. By using different MI's, I believe that every student will be able to show their perosnal mastery of the subject. They can work comfortable because they perform naturally in their best Intelligence and because I have incorporated six intelligences in this lesson, many students will be able to use at least their first or second best MI.
I have also incorporated many technologies into my lessons so that students will be able to have the know-how to use them in the future. Many jobs like their
employees to be able to use technology and create cool slideshows, blogs, calendars, graphs, and more. Having the students use them know only helps them in the future when it is a requirement in college or the workforce.
Type Two Technology: I will have the students using Imovie to create a health ad that will educate others on how a healthy lifestyle is lived.

Standard 8 - Understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and support the development of the learner.
Rationale: By using the variety of formative assessment I will be able to analyze where the students mastery level of the content is at. Using discussions in class, observing students teamwork ability, and evaluating their work performance, I will analyze if students have mastered the content. The summative assessment is a reflection of what the students have learned throughout the lesson. They will master the knowledge prior to teaching their material. If they complete this task they will show that they can educate others on unhealthy habits. This can be beneficial for students that want to work in the health field. Feedback is the biggest tool I will be able to use in assessing the students. That is why it is good that I have entered numerous formative assessments before a final summative assessment at the end.

Teaching and Learning Sequence

Agenda:
Day 1:
8:00am-8:10am: I will direct students to the webquest webpage and explain to them what they will be doing. I will also be divideing students up during this time period. I will direct students to the blog page to show them how to add the information.
8:10am-9:20am: Students will be working independently on both step one and step two of the WebQuest. I will be helping students who need assistance during this time.
Day 2:
8:00am-8:10am: The class will go over what they did in the WebQuest in the previous class and I will ask some questions about the information to see what they are learnign thought the WebQuest experiance.
8:10am-9:20am: Students will continue working on the webquest steps three and four. Once they have finished posting their information to the blog I will direct them to get into their groups. They will decide as a group which three drug topics they would prefer to use in their health ad and send post them to the blog. The "HCC" will respond to the group and tell them which drug they will be adding to their product presentation. Any groups that have finished all the steps individually beofre the end of class can group up and start working on their last step. Creating the health ad.
Day 3:
8:00am-9:20am: This whole class is dedicated to the completion of the health ad. If the ad is not posted to the blog by the end of class, students will have the first ten minutes to do so the next class.
Day 4:
8:00am-8:10am: Adding products to the blog is the focus at the beginning of class.
8:10am-9:20am: Students wil present their health ad and WebQuest information to the class. They will be evaluated by the audience and myself.

My classroom will have the desks in groups of four of five so it is beneficial when I group the students up for working on their presentations.. My desk will be next to the white board where most of the desks will be faced. When giving instructions, students will be asked to turn and face me. This insures that I have all their attention. Students will understand that Students will understand that healthy eating can influence a healthier life, increased physical activity can improve one's health, and behaviors relating towards drugs and alcohol are unhealthy. Tailors:
Visual/Spatial: Students will watch an ad that was created by others about health topics.

Students will know that prevention and awareness of unhealthy decisions can be demonstrated using an ad. Students will then use Think Pair Share to build up and research ad ideas. Students will write ideas down on the HCC blog to focus their ad topics. Then they will collaborate with another person and share ideas. Afterward they will pair up with another group and all be a team in creating an ad. I will be directing lost students throught the WebQuest experience. I will also help students focus the information found onto their blog. The blog serves as a great graphic organizer for the information to be compiled on. Students will have time to critique one another and then be able to create a better finished product. Most of the content is a compilation of information found from various webpages. The information is listed in my content notes. Equip, Explore, Rethink, Revise,

Students will be able to reflect on what they are teaching the class and be able to see the class through the eyes of a teacher. They will be able to self assess their group by filling out a rubric on how they feel they did. They will be asked to write a few comments about what they could have done better. I will be grading the products while the student present the information. they will be getting a grade by the end of class and a few comments on what could have been better. I will allow students who did not do a good job to write a one page write-up about the things I have concerns with. This allows them to reflect on their work. By incorporating the textbook into the lessons that I teach, students will be able connect everything that we do to their homework, assignments, and projects. I teach them tht health has many basic concepts that flow into one another and by teaching to the lessons that I design, I will prepare them for future incounters with health issues. Apply

Content Notes:

Drug information is available in many places. Most information I have learned before and understand completly.

The quiz reflects new scientific findings. For example, you'll lose a few points for eating even lean red meat, because studies suggest that it might increase the risk of colon and prostate cancers. And you'll gain points for eating leafy green vegetables , because they're linked to a lower risk of blindness caused by deterioration of the retina.

"Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for developing coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is characterized by deposits of fatty substances, cholesterol, calcium and other substances in the inner lining of arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. It also contributes to other risk factors, including obesity, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, a low level of HDL ("good") cholesterol and diabetes. Even moderately intense physical activity such as brisk walking is beneficial when done regularly for a total of 30 minutes or longer on most or all days."-American Heart Association

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines sexual health as "the state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being related to sexuality; it is not merely the abscence of disease, dysfunction and infirmity.
